Bake On!

Last Thursday my grandma and I went to a rally at City Hall in Manhattan. Parents and students held a "bake-in" to protest the law that bans the sale of homemade food during school fundraisers. The Department of Education
said that home-made baked goods encourage of obesity in kids.

Something like 100 kids and parents came to the rally. People had set
up tables. One had a sign that said "banned," and it was filled with homemade baked goods. The other table had a sign on it that said "bake sale," and it had chips and pop tarts on it.

Alot of people had signs,
like "Food from our kitchens not from a factory," and "Junk food has no business in our schools." Many of the speakers were angry at Joe Klein and the DOE. They really wanted to bake for their kids' schools. A teenage boy said
, "I know how to bake brownies but I don't know how to bake Doritos
." Everybody cheeered.

I also met a woman who h
ad
a good idea. She was handing out her healthy cake mix. It's called Naturally Nora. It has all natural ingredients in it. It has zero trans fat, no hydrogenated oils and nothing artificial. It's made with wheat flour and even has bits of spinach. I made cupcakes with the mix, and they were good. They tasted better than other cupcakes I've made from mixes--and they're definitely healthier.

More Mura!

I love sushi. So I decided to compare some of the Japanese restaurants in Park Slope. Tonight I started with Mura. I went with Lexi, my sister Kali, my mom and I. Lexi works for the New York Times and is interviewing bloggers like me. She found me and wanted to do an interview.

We arrived at Mura and got a nice table in the sun. The service was good but a little slow. They gave us hot towels to wash our hands. There were paintings on the walls of plants.

The menu has lots and lots of choices, but I know what I like. For an appetizer I had a seaweed salad, my mom had a miso soup. The salad tasted so good I ate every bit of it. When the meals came I was happy. I had a dragon roll with a salmon roll and Lexi had a Passion roll and yellow tail sushi. The Passion roll was very unusual. Salmon and avocado were wrapped in mango. Lexi likes mango, so she thought it was good.

My mom and sister both got the Bento box. My mom's had grilled salmon and a crab cake and my sister's had vegetable tempura and shrimp teriyake. They liked that they got lots of food.

It was all great. Everything was delicious. I talked to the chefs before the main dish came. They were nice and seemed very experienced. They make the food at Mura look very beautiful. The chefs explained how to make sushi. I thought it sounded hard, all that rolling and slicing and cutting and putting it in position.

The best part was dessert. We had fried red bean ice cream and mochi. The mochi was mango and green tea. It came sliced in thirds and looked fancy, like fresh fruit.

Overall I give this restaurant a B+.

No Place Like Home!!!!

There's a new restaurant in Park Slope. It's called Home and serves Vietnamese food.

I went with my grandmother to Home a couple days ago. It was my first time trying Vietnamese food. Home is a Vietnamese sandwich and bubble tea restaurant.

Home is very small. It's just one small room with four tables. The menu has only about 10 choices. I had a classic sandwich. It was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. My grandmother had the grilled pork sandwich. We also got the summer roll for my sister. This is what is in the summer roll: shrimp, lettuce, rice wrapped in rice paper, and served with peanut sauce.

We also got bubble tea. Bubble tea is tea that has tapioca balls in the bottom of the cup. The flavor was vanilla. When I drank the bubble tea I tasted the chewy tapioca in my mouth. I loved that Vietnamese restaurant.
